Gastonia is conveniently located across the Catawba River from Charlotte, just minutes from Uptown and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. It is midway between Atlanta and North Carolina’s Research Triangle.
Gastonia was the center of U.S. textile manufacturing for years, and the remaining factories and former mill villages are a testimony to the area’s heritage. Historic storefronts along Main Avenue feature a variety of restaurants, retail, coffee houses and pubs.
Cultural attractions include the Schiele Museum of Natural History, home to the James H. Lynn Planetarium, the only planetarium in the Charlotte area. Permanent exhibits include the Hall of North Carolina Natural History and the Henry Hall of the American Indian. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is southeast of the city, featuring roughly 400 acres of rolling meadow and woodlands with manicured gardens, trails, fountains and the Orchid Conservatory.
Gaston County also is popular among outdoor enthusiasts. The U.S. National Whitewater Center on the Catawba River is home to the world’s largest man-made whitewater river and offers rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, zip lines and other activities. Thirty miles east, Crowders Mountain State Park offers hiking trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, rock climbing and fishing.
